Realism.

The beginning of realism work began to appear in the 18th century, in other reaction of Romanticism and Neoclassicism. John Singleton Copley’s painting was an evidence of that.  But realism started from the middle 19th century. Artists had salons where they could talk about art and express themselves and have discussions, a long with bars. Began in France with a lot of artists getting inspired, such as Camille Carot, Jean-Francis Millet and other landscape painters.

Salon.

In the 19th century painters couldn't express themselves with their paintings. There was only one option how artists can become successful. There was place where painting would be seen in Le Salon. Was an official place to show art. Who won prizes, at the Salon they had to paint for the government.

Millet Jean Francois - The Gleaners.

The painting of Millet shows three women getting seeds from the ground, picking the left after the harvesting. He gives importance to the women. They were being watched from a guard. The sun gives the gleaners a sculptural look. Millet gives them more color to their clothing. This type of work, it would be given to the poor from rich people. Life at this period of time was classified with classes rich and poor. Now days we still find some that are considered as rich and poor people.

They were there to develop a natural style of art. The painters returned to the easy and sincerity of the subject and style found at that age. Rebellious group they were. Went against the predictability of academic art.

The post impressionism was created by English art critic Roger Fry of the work in the late 19th century painters, such as George Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh and others. post impressionism led away the naturalistic and forward to the two main movements of early 20th century, the cubism and fauvism. It is less casual and more emotions.

George Seurat

Painter and draftsman. The most famous painting of his was 'The Sunday afternoon on this island of La Grande Jatte'. I also liked 'the Eiffel tower' painting of 1889. He is a pointillism painter. using small dots like strokes. Used the color theory to get the small dots and create contrast colors. Used the color palette near each other to get the perfect colors.

Art Visit

Date: 1st April 2015
Venue: The National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta
Names of Practitioners:
Title of Exhibition: Fine Arts.

During this visit I've noticed several types of work from different artists. From the 16th century to the 19th century. Also the silver things with a lot of details on them that you can see. In a specific room, I noticed that the light were low, there was a label saying that the light were low on purpose to protect the water color paintings from discoloring. It was an interesting thing for me to know that.

Abstract. (1919 – 1987) – Emvin Cremona
Abstract
Open Green - Kandinsky
Bright colors mostly the yellow which is eye catching. The mixture of cool, natural and warm colors with lines that goes in different direction that contrasts. Also looks like splashes with paint brush. Created a composition that is different but yet effective. When I first saw this image Kandinsky’s work popped in to my mind which got a similar look to Cremona’s work. The ‘’ Open Green – 1923’’ got the similar colors and position of lines.

Grand Harbour – Thomas Lyde Hornbrook

Grand Harbour
Dull colors, stormy scene. Angry  sea under grey sky. Waves so big and three ships were approaching the shores. Besides it’s a beautiful painting it gives a memory back to how the Grand Harbor was in the past. A painting with a meaningful message in my opinion. From observing I've noticed that nature is more powerful than human. People can do whatever they want but nature can produce even more.

Oxen – (1884 – 1968) Corrado Corelli
Oxen

A sculpture based on the past. Before farmers used to use these animals for helping by pushing the charts and transportation. Showing that one of the oxen is tired and off balance. The sculpture shows certain  details of the oxen’s body, like bones and the spine. A sculpture that is similar to this is the ‘’Two Oxen Pulling a Log Bronze Sculpture’’ which is found in Enumclaw, Washington.

Javelin Thrower – Edward Pirotta

Javelin Thrower
Sport man that throws a stick, part of the athletics. It is sculptured in different position. Reminds me of the Greek and Roman era, that it was much practiced and an important sport back then.  Similar sculpture by ‘’Chiparus, D.H.’’ which got similar position and also the material.

Speed – Antonio Sciortino (1879 – 1947)

Speed
Show a lot of movement. Breathless horses in motion, that leaves behind them strong force of opposite direction. Shows a lot of lines that reflects the movement they are in. From observing I noticed there were bodies of men, which are blurred in lines. Parallel lines, different levels. I see this sculpture as a way of how time pass quickly.

Art Essay
Carmel Bonello

Born in Siggiewi and lives in Mellieha, in 1960. He got his own studio gallery also in Mellieha. Bonello calls himself a prolific expressionist. Through observation I noticed that he paints a lot of local streets and things that reminds us of Malta.  The mood is important to him because it’s something spontaneity   captures the right moment. The artist use black and chromatic colours which a person will enjoy looking at them. Use mixed media and also experiments with different materials. Apart of painting he also creates sculptures with used materials. Carmel considers his work as rough and wild. While drawing he uses a lot of bold lines. His work keeps the persons eye guessing. Apart having his own studio full of his work, he also done several exhibitions, both local and abroad. Through all his art work I've seen and also visiting his studio in Mellieha, I've got inspired from his work by creating more different designs as sculptures from used materials and things. Carmel inspired me from his drawings that when drawing you don't have to create something with perfect things, but can be innovative in your own way, expressed in your own ways.

The village colors

First thoughts that crossed my mind were the grid of Mondrian. Carmel used the similar colors red, blue and yellow, and also the similar lines of proportions. There is also some negative and positive spaces. It doesn't look like it’s 3D and have several formal elements, such as lines and shapes. Bonello drew this painting with acrylic on canvas.

Sunflower

When seeing sunflowers drawing automatically reminds me of Van Gogh. Both are made with oil on canvas. Bonello’s art work got the looks of the paint brush, cool colors and the yellow contrasts a lot with the background. Comparing it with Van Gogh its one color scheme and the flowers themselves looks they’re dying. While Bonello’s art work flowers look full of life. Noticed that the leaves aren't drawn as realistic.

From sketchbook (Untitled)

When seeing this reminds me of Keith Haring. Similar with the figures but different from the colors. Bonello used dark colors and Haring used bold bright colors. The line figure of Haring are more accurate unlike Bonello is more fluent, one have busy background and the other more plain.

The dancers

Use of cool and warm colors mixed together, with black outline. Through the images I've saw of his drawings I noticed more that he makes the outline seen in most of the drawings. Dancers meaning in my opinion gives a movement in life, happy feeling. The most seen formal elements are lines and shapes.

Untitled abstract

What I see is a swirl that grows with every curve. The artist uses water colors, cool and mixed with warm. Busy with black lines as outlines and cracks drawn as if they are on a wall. Compared it with an African swirl drawing. Bonello’s swirl is more into a square form and the Unknown artist is more bold in colors and different in form. They are both oil on canvas.

Still life

Both the comparing is still life. The different texture, Bonello is rougher with the brush strokes seen and Pitre is softer, also the different of classes, one looks like a rich good family and the other of a poor environment. One got bright colors or the light make it look bright and the other one got dark colors, as if it was painted in a dark room with few lights. Bonello painting looks like it was drawn somewhere outside and Pitre inside on a table.

Sketchbook

Exaggerated drawing of a man which doesn't look real. Comparing it with another drawing of African artist. Both got human figures idea but both aren't drawn in realistic way. One is more on yellowish color scheme and the other with primary colors mixed from to get other colors. Both got different shapes, lines and different textures.

Kandinsky

Kandinsky was born on December 1866, from Moscow. He is considered as an abstract person. In my opinion he is one of my favourite artists with the abstract drawings. One of my favourite is ‘circles in a circle’. I’m a person that likes the circle shape. There are other works that I like of Kandinsky, such as ‘Composition VIII and Multicoloured circle. What I like most is by simple shapes he managed to create and good composition and also the colors are light. He is known as a pioneer in the abstract movement.

Orphism

Visual arts get inspired from cubism panting tat gave way to colour. the movement was found in 1912 by French poet Guillcume Apollinaire.  Apollinaire was inspired from the cubist Robert Delaunay. Named the group Orphism from Orpheus, famous poet and singer of Greek mythology. there are more artist working in this style, Fernand Leger, Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia. Delaunay was more interested in geometric. wanted to add colour to cubism together, by Michel - Eugene cheveal a chemist. Surat joined them in landscapes but Delaunay was more into abstract, effect of colour and light. some of his work I've compared it with Kandinsky both are similar to each other. Delaunay creates several paintings made from circles.

Pop Art

Pop art is an art movement that began in the 1950 in America and Britain. An inspirational for sources drawing, popular and commercial culture. Most of them are movies and pop music. Some of the pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and David Hockney. First began in Britain got in its peak in the 1960’s. Andy Warhol was one of the most famous artist that did pop art. Most famous for his Campbell’s Soup. The repetitive design of the can. Some are created in repetitive pattern and also the colours changes. From white background to coloured background. There are about 32 Campbell’s soup cans. What I’ve noticed is that there are different colours on each can. Also the wording colour is different and bright colours are used. The Marilyn Monroe pop art is what I really like from this art movement. Used of bright colours most common is the yellowish hair. As it goes along the pop art is getting more popular and other images are created with bright colours. A recent image saw which it reminded me in pop art is an advertisement show on TV. Uses the bright colours again that catches the eye.
